Black Swallowtail, female

Papilio polyxenes asterias

Description:

Larger, predominantly black butterfly. Underside of hind wings have orange, blue and yellow spots. Upper side of hind wings have blue markings with small yellow areas. Orange and black spot on inner margin of hindwings. Small yellow spots on upper wings.

Habitat:

Urban garden near the water.

Notes:

This swallowtail seemed to be missing her "tails". I am not sure what caused this but she was pretty happy on the flowers otherwise. Egg: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/159...
