Sayornis saya
A songbird in the tyrant flycatcher family. It is gray-brown above with a black tail and buffy cinnamon below. This species primary diet is insects. This one let me take a picture of it with a grasshopper as it perched on a cactus.
Spotted at the Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge. It prefers dry arid areas. It is a year-round resident in southern California but it does migrate in much of its range across western North America.
