Coachwhip

Masticophis flagellum

Description:

My little brother pointed this guy out to me. It was a rather large snake but I don't think it was venomous. It was long about three or four feet in length. It was slithering by one of the outer walls at The Goliad State Historical Area. I just stood back and got this photo of him. He was very cooperative but after awhile had enough and slithered away. These guys are very fast and are none venomous. These guys are so named because of their bullwhip like appearance. They are an efficient predator and can bite if miss handled. These guys very beautiful though and they are by far one of the coolest snakes.

Habitat:

Wooded and Grassy areas where prey is present.
