Description:

About 20-24 millimeters in body length, colored as shown. Male sand wasps are frequently larger than females.

Habitat:

This male was patrolling around a blooming saltcedar tree (Tamarix sp.), hoping to intercept visiting females. Surrounding habitat is heavily degraded shortgrass prairie with sunflower, yucca, and scattered elm trees.
