Sphex lucae
Roughly 22-25 millimeters in body length, all black with violet reflections on the wings.
This was one of several alert, wary specimens taking nectar from a lone, blooming saltcedar tree (Tamarix sp.) in a vast open field of degraded shortgrass prairie with sunflower, yucca, and scattered elm trees.
The females are larger, and black with a red abdomen.
