Cooper Underwing Moth

Amphipyra pyramidoides

Description:

Family: Noctuidae, Subfamily: Amphipyrinae. Although Underwing is part of its name, it is actually a Amphipyrine Sallow Moth. TL 23-28 mm. A common shiny grayish brown moth with FW peppered with pale brown scales. Legs banded brown/black and white. Abdomen banded black and white. 2 white spots on each wings. Hosts: Hawthorn, willow, elm, oak, birch, and other trees and vines.

Habitat:

Woodlands and meadow edges.

Notes:

2 caterpillars found in lilac bush near poplar light source.
