Saddleback Caterpillar Moth larva

Acharia stimulea

Description:

Family: Limacodidae (Slug Moths) Length: Approximately 1 inch (2.54 cm) Brown with green and white "saddle" Very slow moving. Movement is "slug" like. Very sharp spikes. Do not handle. Painful sting. Fake yellow eyes at rear.

Habitat:

Lawn near woodlands and meadow. Winged Burning Bushes near light where I saw many of these adult moths.

Notes:

Photo taken while caterpillar was in motion. Apparently there are two scientific names for this caterpillar, but I am going with Bug Guide and Peterson's Moth book. (Acharia stimulea) The other name is Sibine stimulea.

Thanks Berndt, this is my favorite because it shows movement. But I had a portrait day a few weeks ago with nine of them including video. The slowest caterpillar in the east.
