American Burnweed

Erechtites hieracifolia

Description:

Tall dark green plant with sturdy stalks that end in small tight growth. The tight growth bursts into silky strands similar to that of a spent dandelion. The leaves are large with irregular, spiky edges. The length is split by smaller sections along the edge.

Habitat:

Growing in the edge of a wooded area among the ferns and woodland plants.

Notes:

This plant does not flower but goes from the tight, green "bud" growth to the silky strands. At times the air is full of these light strands. Most of the plants are quite tall and have been heavy enough to fall over.
