Native Australian Stingless Bee

Tetragonula carbonaria

Description:

Very small black stingless bee one of about 1,500 species of native Australian bees. Lives in colonies in tree hollows, under bark or other cavity, produces excellent honey in smaller quantities than introduced larger bees, seeks nectar and collects pollen from flowering plants, gentle and harmless. Honey from native bees is a favourite for Australian Aboriginal people.

Habitat:

Found throughout NSW, Queensland, Northern Territory and other regions. These ones in dry near coastal woodland feeding on grevillea (Moonlight) flowers.
