Laurel Sphinx Moth Caterpillar

Description:

Family: Sphingidae, Subfamily: Sphinginae. (Larva of large sphinx moth). 5th instar. 2 inches at rest (6 cm). 3 inches or more (8 cm) stretched out. Bright Green with black and yellow bands. Green head with black border. Orange "spots". Anal tail is bright blue and black. Larvae feed primarily on lilac, fringe tree, but also popular, honeysuckle and Mountain holly.

Habitat:

Open woodlands on small tree. (ID pending) Range: Eastern 1/3 of North America.
