About 12-14 millimeters in body length, robust; colored as shown. Flight is rapid, often including hovering behavior.
The bee was visiting Penstemon flowers in a riparian corridor adjacent to an arroyo (dry riverbed) with cottonwood, willow, and elm trees dominating. Surrounding habitat is degraded shortgrass prairie with sunflower, yucca, and prickly-pear cacti.
