Oil Nut

Pyrularia pubera

Description:

shrub 5-6' tall. Long pointy buds. In the fall, leaves don't lose color. They just wilt then fall to the ground.

Habitat:

Great Smoky Mountains Nat'l Park

Notes:

Pioneers would press the oil from the nut and mix it with tallow to make candles. The oil, being toxic, deterred rodents from eating the candles. Also called buffalo nut. Winter Woody Tree ID class.
