Meadow Jumping Mouse

Zapus hudsonius

Description:

Very long tail and hind feet, small ears and short front legs. I almost stepped on this little mouse while I was photographing moths at the porch light. It seems to have been attracted to the hundreds of mayflies that had flown to light and died the night before. Although this is apparently a very common species, I have to admit this has been my only encounter with one thus far.

Habitat:

Diverse woods near a small lake. Possibly living below my cabin.

Quite small -- I'd say less than 2" (not including the tail).
