Large Yellow Underwing Moth

Noctua pronuba

Description:

Family: Noctuidae, Subfamily: Noctuinae, Tribe: Noctuini. Although "Underwing" is part of its common name, this is not an underwing moth but a type of common, large and heavy Dart Moth. Size: TL 30-35 mm. WS 50-60 mm. FW varies from pale tan, orange-color to brown. One black patch/spot on each wing. HW is yellow/orange with black band. Hosts: Grasses and low plants.

Habitat:

Meadows, fields and gardens. Range: North America, Europe, North Africa to India.

Notes:

Hanging from an old planter of various flowers. Larva damage crops extensively.
