Coral Tooth

Hericium coralloides

Description:

about 3"

Habitat:

dead log, Carolinian forest

Notes:

One of the coolest fungi I've seen, and even more amazingly, right beside another awesome fungi, the bearded tooth polypore. These were't easy to photograph. Both were growing low on a dead log and low to the ground but not low enough for me to lie flat on the ground with a stable shot. Plus I had to move a small poison ivy vine out of the way. I stepped on it and covered it with dirt and hoped I didn't brush it accidentally.

That did cross my mind, but I think it's significantly different to be another species. From what I read in the Audubon guide to mushrooms, it doesn't say anything about it appearing like this when it's young.

Maybe a youthful version of the same.
