Weevil Wasp

Cerceris spp.

Some key ID features: 6 yellow bands on abdomen, the thorax has yellow spots only on the side and bottom - none on top, silvery metallic eyes and it's antennae are yellow at the base and black on the tips - most other wasp are not like that.

Spotted in backyard.

These are a very interesting wasp - they use scents to mark their territories, the female bite and inject a paralyzing agent into weevils and small beetles then carry it back to the hive to feed the larvae as they hatch.
