Imperial moth

Eacles imperialis

Description:

The Imperial moth is distinctive looking with yellow, brown, and sometimes red and purple patches. Adults have wingspans between 80 and 175 mm (3+1⁄8 and 6+7⁄8 inches).

Habitat:

Attracted to lights in my backyard. Deciduous forest nearby.

Notes:

Similar to many other Saturniidae larvae, the imperial moth has five instars. Larvae feed on leaves of Bald Cypress, basswood, birch, cedar, elm, hickory, Honeylocust, maple, oak, pine, Sassafras (Sassafras albidum), Sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua), sycamore, walnut. Adults do not feed.
