A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Liatris tenuifolia var. quadriflora
Just starting to bloom. >3ft. Basal rosette consists of long and narrow leaves. Stem leaves rapidly reduced in size upward. Flower heads on all sides of the stem, (unlike the related L. panciflora, also found in the same habitat) stalked, usually of 5 rosy-purple florets. (based on "Florida Wildflowers in their Native Habitats", by Walter Taylor.
Pine Sandhills, Pine Flatwoods, sometimes scrub.
This particular specimen is already up and blooming just 4 weeks after a prescribed burn! A potent testimony to the importance of fire in a Pineland.
