Texas Coral Snake

Micrurus tener

Description:

Coral snakes have full body bands in colors of black, yellow, and red. Their venom is highly toxic, but they aren't a huge danger to humans due to the fact that they aren't encountered very often and have a pretty mild temper.

Habitat:

They spend most of their time burrowed underground, hiding in leaf litter, or hiding under logs.

Notes:

Found at dusk right on the Rio Grande River at Southmost Nursery Preserve.

Hi Ashley. Just seeing this as the PN search doesn't work. I'm trying to drub up more coral snakes. I'm surprised at how few have been spotted. It would be great if you could add this to my Coral Snake Mission (https://www.projectnoah.org/missions/240......). Thanks.

Plus, you'd have to be holding it for one of these guys to bite you ;-) Keep in mind for those who read this - they have fixed FRONT fangs. I dont know why a lot of people get the assumption that they are rear fanged snakes . . . *sigh* Great shot Ashley!
