Arctiine tussock moth

Halysidota sp.

Description:

Approximately 24 mm. long with an off-white color and tan bands edged in a darker brown. Two prominent blue and yellow-orange streaks down the center of the thorax.

Habitat:

This came to a porch light at 3:30 AM. The surrounding area is mostly weedy fields and deciduous woodlands.

Notes:

This could be either Halysidota tessellaris or Halysidota harrisii in my area. According to BugGuide.net and other sources, adults of these species can only be distinguished by dissection of the genitalia. Posted to honor Moth Week 2018.
