Cortinar Mushrooms

Cortinarius sp.

Description:

These mushrooms had an interesting red/orange/brown tie dye pattern on their caps. There were three mushrooms growing near each other, and the largest had a cap size of just over 5cm. The stems had similar colors as the caps. The gills were cinnamon brown.

Habitat:

Growing on the ground in a deciduous forest.

Notes:

Several mushrooms in this genus are poisonous and can cause acute tubulointerstitial nephritis, which is a disease that affects the kidneys and can lead to kidney failure. In addition, some species are actually lethal. Therefore, it is suggested that none of the mushrooms from this genus be consumed especially because it can be very difficult to distinguish between species.
