Broad-banded Water Snake

Nerodia fasciata confluens

Description:

The broad-banded water snake is a subspecies of the southern water snake. They are a dark black almost with broad bands of cream or orange. When they are juveniles, they are vividly orange and yellow banded, but the colors fade as they get older. They are very angry snakes and will not hesitate to bite at any opportunity you give them!

Habitat:

They are found throughout the lower Mississippi river valley, from East Texas to western Mississippi and north to southern tip of Illinois. Being a water snake, they are always found near freshwater.

Notes:

This was by far the grumpiest snake I have ever encountered!

Ha yep, Nerodia are among the "meanest" snakes out there.

They are really pretty, but every one I have found has tried to bite the entire time someone was holding it. So grumpy!! Still my favorite water snake though!
