Red Russula (aka Rosy Brittlegills)

Russula sp. (most likely R. aff. rosacea)

Description:

Red Russula fungi, of which there are several species native to Australia. Also known as Rosy Brittlegills. A couple of species (R. persanguinea and R. lenkunya) are mychorrhizal with eucalypt roots, both alive and dead. However, there were no eucalypts in this immediate area, although they weren't too far off. This spotting was also growing on soil. Only one specimen found. Have yet to nail down a positive ID, but I'm leaning towards R. aff. rosacea as the most likely species. One thing that have notice about this spotting is the stipe - it's a pinkinsh-red, whereas most Russula fungi seem to have a white stipe.

Habitat:

Spotted by Enoggera Creek at margin of native subtropical rainforest, in the Brisbane Forest Park. Growing on alluvial soil in a cool, damp and well-shaded area.
