Monarch Butterfly

Danaus plexippus

Description:

Family: Nymphalidae. A common and most well-known butterfly of North America. Bright orange with black vein and white spots on wings and abdomen. Males have one spot on each wing. Wingspan: 8.9 - 10 cm (3 1/2 - 4 inches) Adults feed on nectar of various flowers including goldenrod and white aster flowers and purple clover (shown). Host: Milkweed.

Habitat:

Large open meadow with abundant flowers

Notes:

Well-known for its lengthy migration south to Mexico. This male is a late flier.
