Whooping cranes

Grus americana

Description:

The tallest bird in North America, the whooping crane is also one of the most endangered. Louisiana is working very hard in bringing back the population of these magnificant birds. This is a quote from an article in About.com endangered Species--" In February of 2011, ten young whooping cranes that had been hatched and raised in captivity at the U.S. Geological Survey's Patuxent Wildlife Research Center in Maryland were flown to the White Lake Wetland Conservation Area in Vermilion Parish, Louisiana. They were held in a netted pen for a few weeks to help them safely acclimate to the new area. When the day of their wild release came, the netting was opened, and biologists watched as whooping cranes launch over the Louisiana marshes for the first time in 60 years."

Habitat:

We were visiting the White Lake Wetland Conservation Area in Louisiana and 3 whooping cranes were flying overhead very high . So far away but there they were. So glad to have seen them. This was my first whooping crane spotting and hope to have more and more.
