garden maggot - female

Bibio imitator

Description:

A black winged insect about 10mm long with a yellow abdomen and shiny rounded orange thorax. The lateral aspects of the thorax appeared to have dense setae. Legs were black with thick femur and tibia on the first pair. Pic #1 shows a small head with a pair of dark but small compound eyes and small greyish labellum.

Habitat:

Feeding on nectar - spotted on a willow myrtle tree ( Agonis reflexuosa)

Notes:

An attractive fly. The Willow Myrtle is host to several insects, including honey bees - I have spotted five different species on this very tree with its beautiful flowers on pendulous branches.
