Pyrocephalus rubinus flammeus
Rare to the Central Valley, more common in Southern California. Gray-brown upperside and tail that also runs across the eye. Bright red or red-orange crested crown and underside. Dark eyes, short pointed bill and legs.
This one was on a side road between a levee and a flooded field and a dyke.
Been reported this bird has been here before last year and possibly before that.

Beautiful bird!! There are eleven subspecies of Pyrocephalus rubinus and probably this is the subspecie flammeus (Pyrocephalus rubinus flammeus).
Pyrocephalus rubinus rubinus (common name Principe) is the specie found in Brazil, where it is normally viewed in couples. You can know all 11 names of subspecies with the respective distribution, visiting in the brazilian site at this page:
