Brown Thrasher

Toxastoma rufum

Description:

The brown thrasher has heavy breast streaks, is reddish brown on the upperparts and head. Two white wing bars, yellow eye, curved bill, long reddish brown tail and gray cheeks.

Habitat:

This brown thrasher was spotted near our camper on the outskirts of the swamp woods at Palmetto Island State Park in Abbeville, Louisiana. I was inside the camper when I spotted him and he knew I was watching him but he wanted the bird seed that I had scattered on the ground. Because of this, I was able to get these pictures.

Glad it's a new one! I haven't managed to find a Wood Thrush yet, hoping to turn one up this summer though!

Thank you again Ashley for catching my mistake. This is a new bird spotting for me. I've seen a wood thrush but never a brown thrasher. Always exciting to see something new. Thanks so much.

Your first clue this is not a Wood Thrush is the yellow eye. It also has a longer tail and bill than a Wood Thrush. Wood Thrush also have a spotted breast, whereas a Brown Thrasher has a streaked breast. Wood Thrush are also in Central America right now.
