Bibio imitator (male & female)
Two australian bibio flies mating. The larger one with a red thorax, about 10mm long, is the female and the smaller, about 7mm long, is the male fly. The male had a paler thorax and more delicate-looking wings. It looked like a large mosquito from afar. The other significant distinguishing feature are the compound eyes of the male - there seemed to be no separation between the eyes. Together, the eyes looked like a giant black mustard seed joined to the thorax by a short narrow neck.
