Sciurus carolinensis
a melanistic variety of the Eastern Grey Squirrel
Our front and back yard which butts up to a freshwater lake on one side and a swamp or marsh area in the far back and is surrounded by farm fields, woods and native prairie grass fields
We have possibly an equal number of these all-black squirrels as the typical gray-colored squirrels. Second in numbers would be the small Red Squirrels followed by the far fewer in number Fox Squirrels. I've seen all our squirrels eat peanuts, black-oil sunflower seeds, orange halves as well as acorns and other natural food sources
