Tangaroa wae whitu (NZ Seven-armed starfish)

Astrostole scabra

Description:

The seven-armed prickly star (Astrostole scabra) is not found in the intertidal (but this one was spotted at Houghton bay). It is the largest sea star in NZ, with arms extending to 75cm, although my starfish was a rather young (and small) animal. It feeds on other echinoderms: sea urchins and starfish. I am not sure the starfish I found was alive, but I throw it back in the water, hoping it was going to make it :)
