Band-tailed pigeon

Patagioenas fasciata

Description:

This is the biggest pigeon in North America, measuring 33-40 cm (13-16 in) long. They are Western American birds so it was very unusual to see one on the North Carolina coast. It was attracted to a bird feeder in a private yard; the family living there was kindly letting birders visit their yard to get a sighting and take photos.

Habitat:

Private urban yard

It really was nice of them; people were coming and going at their house as the word seemed to spreading quickly among the birding community!

So nice of the family to let you see it! Always nice when a rare bird ends up in a birders yard :)
