Red-lined Carrion Beetle

Necrodes surinamensis

Description:

Large carrion beetle

Habitat:

Woodland, front porch light

Notes:

This carrion beetle came to my porch light. This beetle breeds on larger animal carcasses and does not care for its young. It protects and transports mites of the genus Poecilochirus and in turn the mites eat fly eggs reducing competition for food.
