Buteo jamaicensis
There were two of these guys on a telephone pole near the freeway, when I stopped to take pictures one flew off. I drove back by over 3 hours later and they were both on the same pole still.
Oh geez, I couldn't imagine trying to ID something like that,it's really pretty though! I'm more of a herp person myself, and have only come across a few weird ones, but they always had something that distinguished them other than their colors. I guess it would be different if I knew birds really well, I'm getting there though!
Absolutely!! They're like people though...they come in all colors or "morphs"...check out this one that my friend took here in Colorado...it's a leucistic Red-Tail...not albino...and has dark eyes, a few dark tail feathers and some dark feathers on his head: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/981...
Oh wow, that one looks so different! Thanks for actually explaining it to me, that's the only way I'll learn anything lol
It totally did the same for me!! Definitely an adult. 2 indicators: the red tail comes in the 2nd year (the juvenile tail is brown with barring), and the eyes are dark (they slowly darken over 3-4-5 years...). Here's a very classic first-year juvi: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/103...
Well PN has really inspired me to get out more and always have my camera with me, so hopefully I can add more to your mission soon! Is this an adult? I haven't seen many hawks so I'm not very good with them yet.
LOL!! That predictable, huh?? We're almost to 1000 spottings in the mission, so bring 'em on!!! ;-)
I could't find the mission when I first added this picture, but I knew you would find me and give me the link haha. I'll add it now!
Nice series, Ashley! I'd love you to add this spotting to the mission Raptors of North America: http://www.projectnoah.org/missions/8627...
