Monotropa uniflora
Approximately 3" high. Delicate, stemmed growth. White: white as in growing under-a-rock or never-seeing-the-sun white. Slight touch of purple. Some had a bell-shaped "bloom" while others were "blooms" that were more reminiscent of the tulip shape.
Moist, shaded area next to a shed. It popped up through a layer of dead leaves and stray, weedy grasses.
This is an old spotting documented by an old, low-resolution camera. This was the only time these have been seen; I look for them every year but have never again seen them. This plant is also known as Ghost Plant and Corpse Plant. It is a plant that does not make chlorphyll.
Winsted, huh? RiekoS....I grew up in Unionville. I only saw this the one time. It was growing beside and behind the tool shed which is in the corner of the yard on the edge of the woods. Now that I've got a decent camera and macro lens, I hope I see it again!
I have seen this plant in Winsted, CT (in the wood).
It seems grow within a day and disappear very quickly.
I was wondering what it was.
