African hummingbird moth

Macroglossum trochilus

Description:

Small wingspan about 38mm. Fore wings banded, thorax reddish brown, abdomen orange shading to brown. Hing wings yellow at base, shading to orange and then brown. Black and white abdominal fan is opened in flight.

Habitat:

A range of veld types. Common in Gardens. Like various tubular flowers, especially perennial basil and lavender.

Notes:

Not easy to take photos of this beautiful moth, it’s really fast.
