Goosander or Common Merganser (male) - Harle bièvre - Gänsesäger

Mergus merganser

Description:

The goosander is recognizable by its long narrow red bill that ends with a hook. While swimming this duck retracts most of its long neck. Its head appears large due to presence of a crest at the hindcrown and nape.

Habitat:

The shore of a large central European lake.

Notes:

A few of these birds are resident on Lake Geneva, but at the moment they are joined by flocks of migrants from Scandinavia and Russia.
