Great Cormorant

Phalacrocorax carbo

Description:

This great cormorant was observed fishing. It spent up to 30 seconds under water and only came up for a few seconds in between, when these pics were taken; its body remained partially submerged. Seen in flight on the last shot.

Habitat:

The shores of a large central European lake.

Notes:

There are only few of these birds left in Switzerland in winter. Most migrate south towards France and Spain.

Thanks you António and Argy! We have a breeding population of these birds, but they migrate south in the winter. On the other hand, we get winter migrants from further north. Who knows where this one was off to!
