Picoides pubescens
All images are what I believe to be female, Downy Woodpeckers
On or near Paper-white Birch Trees where I have one of our hanging Beef Suet baskets suspended from a branch. Suet and trees are near a (frozen) lake and within 5 miles of wetlands, farmlands and woods.
My beef suet supply is getting low so I only had one basket full with two others partially full but in smaller baskets and hanging on a pole verses a tree. With limited suet available and colder temperatures the Woodpeckers paid more attention to chasing each other away than to me or my camera this day. Also on the tree and beef suet this day were: White and Red-breasted Nuthatches, Blue Jays, Black-capped Chickadees as well as Red-bellied, Pileated, Hairy and Downy Woodpeckers.
