Description:

Approx 45mm long; wings closed only underwing seen.

Habitat:

Resting in very long grass in suburban back yard.

Notes:

So many around at the moment - female Heteronympha merope... "The Common Brown Butterfly is dark brown and orange brown. The female butterflies are larger with bolder markings. The outer half of the female's forewings are brown with orange blotches and a single small eyespot near apex. The male has duller forewings with single eyespot. Upper side of hindwings in both male and female is orange-brown with small eyespot and narrow darker brown border." - Ozanimals.com
