Pink knotweed

Persicaria capitata

Description:

Very small globe-like pink flowers with red leaves. From a distance, the clusters of flowers appear as red blotches on the landscape (3rd photo). The plant emits a strong odor of urine, although I did not notice in the open air.

Habitat:

Alpine area of Hawaii on Saddle Rd, which spans between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, in close proximity to lava fields. It's native to Asia.

I was also thinking along those lines and it may be the case, Dan. They were just so small and unusual looking.

I'll try to look up clovers in Hawaii and see where that goes.

Hmmmm, this looks like some type of clover by the flower, but not sure.
