Western Sandpiper

Calidris mauri

Description:

The other birds in the top are for comparing sizes only. One of the smallest of the Sandpipers, these birds have dark legs and a short thin dark bill. The body is brown on back and white belly. They are reddish-brown on the head. They can be difficult to tell from other similar small shorebirds especially in their winter plumage. They mainly eat insects, small crustaceans and mollusks.

Habitat:

From Alaska they winter in North America and South America.Mostly found on mud flats in the winter and the tundra and wet meadows in the breeding season.

Notes:

I had to request help because these little guys were with 5 other species ranging in different sizes. The were spotted near many other species of sandpiper species as well as some Northern Shovelers.
