Northern Cardinal

Cardinalis cardinalis

Description:

Distinct and conspicuous red colour, and a crest on its head. Is fairly large, with a long tail. The female is a duller brown, but still sports the crest.

Habitat:

Found throughout southern Canada and parts of the States. This one was spotted in Sunnybrook Park in Toronto. They do not leave for the winter.

Notes:

Eats mostly grains&seeds, but also fruit and insects. Tend to forage on or close to the ground.
