Crowned Slug Moth Caterpillar

Description:

Larvae are green, corsoventrally flattened with enlarged scoli projecting horizontally to encircle the body. Each body segment has strong vertical ridges. There is variation in the amount of red coloration present on the dorsal area.

Habitat:

Woodland. All instars seem to prefer trees and high shrubs such as maple, hazelnut, hornbeam, beech, chestnut, oak, hickory, buckeye, bayberry, cherry, basswood, elm.

Notes:

I found this beauty in the yard on a tree, right at about eye level.

I live in the woods and I have a lot of water features in the yard, so it can get pretty bad here too. But I've found that the mosquitoes are the worst around dusk and then dawn. They really don't bother me like say 10 pm to 3 am. But there are other tiny insects that might bite, like no-see-um's

Yes, I will be trying a black light this season to draw in moths.

Thanks John D. The slugs are one of my favorite caterpillars. I find most of them here on oak and redbud. I'd like to try going out this summer at night with a black-light flashlight to look for them.
