Tiger Moth Caterpillar

Arctiinae or Aganainae

Description:

I am pretty sure that this kind of hairy caterpillar belongs to the Tiger Moth group and is a larva of either of the subfamilies Arctiinae or Aganainae.

Habitat:

Spotted on an unidentified tree in our backyard.

Thank you, Sukanya. The photo, from which these pictures were cropped, was intended to be a spotting of some Barklice which appeared to be damaging the tree. These creatures are extremely small and I felt that the quality of the photo was not good enough to be posted on Project Noah. However, a few days ago, I was reviewing some old pictures and only then (8 years after the event) did I see the caterpillar. I had to sharpen the original photo rather excessively to make the caterpillar a little more visible. I have now posted a spotting of the Barklice - https://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/20........ as originally intended. So you were absolutely right. The caterpillar does blend rather well with the background.
