Philippine Fruit Fly

Bactrocera philippinensis

Description:

Bactrocera philippinensis (Drew & Hancock), is a native to the Philippines and introduced to Palau. This species belongs to the Oriental fruit fly species complex, composed of fifty-two closely similar species in Tropical Asia. Similar to other fruit fly species - female flies lay eggs in groups in the flesh of fruit. The larvae feed on the fruit and pupate in the soil. It is an important quarantine pest. It has been reported to damage many fruits seriously, such as mango Mangifera indica L., papaya Carica papaya L. and jackfruit Artocarpus heterophyllus Lam.

Habitat:

Backyard garden.
