(Eurasian) Wigeon

Mareca penelope

Description:

A lone male observed surrounded by a group of female Gadwalls (recognized by the white speculum). During the count the day before, we observed also a female (but both too far away for my camera), which I was unable to spot on this Sunday. Previously placed in Anas genus, this species is today placed in genus Mareca

Habitat:

Not very common species in our part of Europe, but occasional winter visitor and found in or around wetlands. Here, observed in north-eastern wetlands of pays de Gex - small area located in between the Jura range and Geneva lake.

Notes:

Observed during the Wetlands Bird Count 2019 - only 11 individuals counted in entire zone.
