Rana sylvatica
1 1/2 -3 1/4 inches. A northern species, found in the Northeast and upper Midwest of the United States, and throughout most of Canada and Alaska. Breeds after first spring rains, sometimes with snow still on ground. Identified by dark "robber's mask" bordered by white stripe on upper jaw, both ending just behind eardrum. Prominent ridges at juncture of back and sides. Western representatives typically have light down middle of back.
Males gather in woodland pools and roadside ditches. Vernal pools. In summer, Wood frogs stray some distance from water.
