Huntsman Spider

Isopeda sp.

Description:

Between 7 and 10cm. Long hairy legs. Brown. They can move very quickly if they are excited but they were calm here and didn't move. Possibly another of four species from I. vasta or I. montana groups of species. The spots on the abdomen are different from previous specimens as is the more globular abdomen. According to "Revision of the Genus Isopeda Koch (Heteropodidae : Araneae) in Australia" I. vasta is not known in the area. David Hirst now identifies Isopeda vasta and I. montana groups of species and this appears to be one such

Habitat:

Under bark, on trees and wall and inside buildings. Under piles of things like building materials or bricks or log. Normally nocturnal

Notes:

I think there are three individuals in this series. They were spread through a small grove during one photo shoot tonight It is likely there were many more . The last image is of a specimen that was trying to hide it's kill from the light by shoving it beneath it's body
