Black-billed magpie

Pica hudsonia

Description:

The black-billed magpies are quite unique with their very long tails and their black/blue and white coloring. When I spotted the two of them, they were quite noisy and busy. They remind me of crows. Black-billed Magpies are found in western North America. They eat fruits, grains, insects, small animals, and frequently gather in large flocks at carrion. Also known as the American magpie.

Habitat:

Black-billed Magpies can be found in towns, fields, and near streams throughout the West. They also concentrate in flocks at feedlots and other areas where food is easy to find. This pair of magpies were spotted in a forested area with a stream near a campground in Cody, Wyoming.
